Players get two draft picks in Klay Thompson sign and trade – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The Warriors lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in NBA free agency, and now we know what they’ll be getting as part of a number of team signings and trades that include the Charlotte Hornets.

Golden State will receive two future second-round draft picks, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole, noting the Warriors don’t want another salary cap in return.

Without bringing back any salary, the Warriors will create a $16 million trade exception as specified. NBA Insider Marc SteinTo use for future moves.

Here’s a breakdown of the entire transaction:

  • Warriors get: Two second-round draft picks (less favorable for Dallas’ 2031 pick and the Denver Nuggets/Philadelphia 76ers’ 2025 pick) and a trade exception
  • Dallas gets: Clay Thompson
  • Charlotte receives: Josh Green

Thompson plans to join Dallas on a three-year, $50 million deal with a player option, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski cited sources as saying the Warriors and Mavericks were still finalizing details at the time of the initial report.

As part of the deal for Wojnarowski, Charlotte sent two second-round picks to Dallas for the Green, one of which was eventually returned to Golden State.

The Warriors suffered a big loss on Monday, and while the emotional aspect of it will certainly sting for a while, the financial savings is a plus for Golden State.
