UPDATE: MHA Dempster says first flight across Strait of Belle Isle tentatively scheduled for 5 pm

The new ferry for the Strait of Belle Isle is named the Qajaq W, pronounced kayak. Some are concerned that the spelling of the name uses a different Inuit dialect than is used in Labrador.

Earlier story:

The Strait of Belle Isle ferry hasn’t been running for five days straight and now the local MHA is working with the Department of Transportation and Works to accommodate travellers.

Cartwright – L’Anse au Clair MHA Lisa Dempster posted on Facebook Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, that she was looking to arrange flight service to travellers impacted by the delay.

She says an update will provided once she has more information.

The MV Qajaq W has been stranded in St. Barbe since Friday, Feb. 8. High winds over the past few days have kept the vessel from making a crossing.

Currently, ice conditions are keeping the Qajaq in St. Barbe with no icebreaker available for assistance.
