Doubt Aaron Rodgers will play again?

Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon explain what reservations they have about Aaron Rodgers playing in 2024.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Thursday that surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg “went great.”

Rodgers, 39, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on the fourth snap with his new team against Buffalo during the Jets’ season-opening 22-16 overtime victory.

The four-time NFL MVP posted a photo and statement on his Instagram story the day after his surgery, which was performed by Dr. Neil ElAtrach.

“The surgery went great yesterday,” the Jets quarterback said in his post. “Thank you for all the love and prayers and support. And thank you (GOAT) Dr. ElAttrache and his staff for starting me on the road to recovery.”

Rodgers, who faces months of intensive rehabilitation, made his first comments on his season-ending Achilles injury in a post on his Instagram page on Wednesday.

“I am completely heartbroken and moved by all the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers today as I begin the healing process,” Rodgers wrote.

“The night is darkest before the dawn,” he continued. “I’ll be up again.”

Rodgers’ comments came shortly after Jets coach Robert Salleh and owner Woody Johnson both indicated they expect the four-time MVP to return in 2024.

“I would be shocked if this is the way he goes out,” Saleh told reporters.

Saleh said he had not discussed the future with him, saying Rodgers was “working on a lot of head space stuff that he has to deal with, and that’s the last time I’ll talk to him.”

Before the injury, Rodgers had stated on several occasions that his goal was to play for several years with the Jets. He is signed through 2025 and will have $38 million guaranteed in 2024.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini contributed to this report.
