ST. ANTHONY, N.L.
The phones were ringing off the hook for another edition of the St. Anthony Fire Department’s telethon on Nov. 7.
This year’s event, the 25th annual, raised $33,755 for the department, $7,000 more than was collected last year.
Fire chief Peter Green says the money will be used to upgrade and purchase equipment.
Volunteers rotated taking calls from pledgers throughout the evening while local musicians provided entertainment downstairs.
For the second straight year, the dept broadcasted the telethon through Facebook. In previous years, it was broadcasted within town via cable television.
Now, however, the audience is expanding.
Chief Green says there were viewers from all over the United States, including from Indiana, Georgia, Florida and Los Angeles.
Draws were held throughout the evening and included prizes such as two PAL airlines tickets, a 32-inch television and more.
Green said the telethon is made possible by local volunteers, and donations from businesses, and he thanks them all.
