MAIN BROOK, NL – The Mary Simms All Grade Grizzlies continues to be an inspiring underdog story out of Main Brook.
The senior high volleyball team recently competed in the NLVA VolleyCentral Senior High Male B Division, winning two of five games, all against bigger schools.
The team made it all the way to the semi-finals and only lost narrowly, 25-23, 27-25.
At one point they had a winning point, but it was called on a net violation.
“We’re competing against schools that are much bigger and have more athletes to choose from,” school principal and coach Raymond Byrne told the Northern Pen.
After the event, the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association’s Facebook page posted a shout out to the team for its achievements.
The Grizzlies are comprised of both junior and senior high players, as well as a female student in Grade 10, Katelynn Russell.
It is a Single A team, and was competing against Double A competition.
When he spoke to the Northern Pen last week, Byrne said the team was looking forward to the Single A Qualifier in Woody Point.
The winner will qualify for provincials.
Byrne wished to thank the community for its support through donations, ticket sales and other fundraisers.
“For such a small base to raise such as large amount of money to support the team is fantastic,” he said.
