Polars claim Peewee “F” in overtime win

The contesting of a three-way tie to see who would make it into the Peewee “F” championship game was only the start of the excitement leading into the finals held in St. Anthony on March 30.

St. Anthony, Clarenville and Conception Bay Regional were each tied with four wins.
Through a lot of debate amongst the teams, coaches and Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador representatives, the handbook formula — goals for in round-robin play, divided by goals, plus goals against — was used to indicate St. Anthony and Conception Bay would square off for the gold.
The game opened up with the Conception Bay Renegades taking control, pocketing a two-goal lead, but the Polars would rally hard with Kyle Dredge and Alex Powell bringing it back to even before the end of the first period.
It was the opening of a back-and-forth game that would see the Polars down 6-5 leading into the final minute of play.
When puck advantage went to the Polars, coach Todd Taylor signaled goaltender DJ Noel to the bench and the rush was on.
With 16 seconds left on the clock, Matt Taylor notched the goal that would force overtime.
Capitalizing on the momentum, Taylor again came up big for the Polars, providing the game winning goal just 29 seconds into OT.
