Talk about bonuses

In the English dictionary there is a word which to some it’s “The sweetest word on mortal tongue”, to others it’s a “dirty word” depending on where you sit.

On the receiving end or on the wishing end, the word is “bonuses” and never was this word exposed in all its glory than it has been over the past week when the different medias reported that Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and its parent company, Nalcor, received in 2014 $380,000 in bonuses.
Now bonuses or “tips” isn’t something new. It goes back a long way. I remember back in the fifties when cod production at the fish plant was all done by hand, before automation took over the work place. I recall those of us who were on the production, ever so often we were put on a production test, and if we came out with a good year we would be given a bonus. Unlike the crown corporation bonus, the fish plant bonus was calculated in cents not dollars.
People are asking how is the crown corporation bonuses administered, when does it kick in and you get all kinds of reasons referring to the power company. Some say, maybe every time a bulb goes out that’s pennies in the “bonus pot”. Another suggests that if a big generator is shut down that’s a fuel saver and a lot of dollars for the bonus pot, naturally the opposition is free to criticize the bonus structure as it exist, but if you are on the government side you better not, or risk getting your knuckles wrapped. You know politics is funny, to say the least. Have you ever taken notice that only the very few pieces of legislation which pass through the House of Commons or House of Assembly by all parties “without a hitch” is a bill to increase the wages of politicians or other benefits, politicians are human too.
