Ask politicians their position on fracking

There is never a better time to ask serious and meaningful questions of politicians than during an election. Their positions affect your future and the future of your children. So ask and then hold them accountable by getting written commitments of resignation should they breach their solemn promise to you and to future generations. There should be no room for political malpractice!

There are many issues of deep concern to Canadians everywhere.
Here is one such issue as food for thought along with my own position.
What is your position on Fracking?
Physicians for social responsibility have taken a very strong position on this matter in the United States. Here in part is some of what they say:
Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” is a natural gas extraction process that is proving to have negative consequences for human health and for climate change. Fracking for natural gas extraction creates potentially harmful health effects along its entire life cycle: the hydraulic fracturing technique itself, as well as associated processes including road building, pad clearing, truck trips, drilling, cementing, flow-back waters, off-gassing, fugitive emissions, compressors, and pipelines. Among the most serious sources of concern are:
•     Toxic drilling fluids and fracturing fluids, injected deep underground and then withdrawn, may contaminate underground aquifers and surface waters.
•     Air emissions including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) threaten human health, especially of workers and residents of the immediate vicinity.
•     Diesel pollution and noise pollution can be constant, as truck traffic is intensive and fracking continues 24-7.
•     Stress factors affect the quality of life in communities where drilling occurs.
•     Methane leaks accelerate climate change. Methane is 72 times more potent at capturing heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after release. (PFSR)
•     Scientists now believe fracking causes earthquakes (CBC, BC)
•     Companies are sending 2-4m gallons of water and a cocktail of chemicals at super high pressures miles under the earth to break up rock formations in search of gas and oil. The toxic sludge that comes back is returned into the environment in one form or another. We KNOW VERY LITTLE about fracking.

My position
Fracking should be halted immediately in Canada! We do not know the full consequences and health effects of this type of drilling into the earth and until studies prove conclusively that it is not harmful to human health and the environment a national moratorium should be put in place ASAP.
