Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for a number of Labrador towns.

It says Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls, Churchill Valley, Hopedale, Postville and Makkovik can all expect significant snowfall this weekend.

“Environment Canada meteorologists are monitoring a developing storm system which appears poised to bring wintry weather to western and northern Labrador,” reads the statement.

“Current indications suggest snow will arrive over western Labrador late on Saturday and then advance to reach parts of Labrador’s north coast by early Sunday.”

Depending on the storm’s track, the statement says, the snow may later change to freezing rain in western Labrador, but “it appears snow will likely prevail as the dominant form of precipitation.”

The forecaster says it is too soon to provide accumulations, but the amounts could potentially impact travel and related activities.

“The public is advised to plan and prepare accordingly."
