Fundraiser aims to raise $30,000 to send family on vacation

MARYSTOWN, NL – An online fundraiser for Amanda Sheppard of Marystown is aiming to give her family a much-needed vacation and a chance to make some memories.

“The ultimate goal is to get Amanda's parents, her two kids and her to Disney World to enjoy an ultimate vacation that they are all well deserving of,” according to a post on the GoFundMe page set up by friend Rebecca Brushett.

Sheppard, who has battled cancer before, recently learned the disease has returned.

Brushett told the Southern Gazette that having watched their friend go through the same thing in 2016 when Sheppard was diagnosed with breast cancer, she and friends Allison Stewart and Susan Allain knew they needed to do something to help lift the family’s spirits.

“These memories are something we feel the boys need with their mom and the break and relaxation is something Amanda and her parents deserve,” said Brushett.

“We decided that Amanda and her family needed this trip no matter what the outcome of the diagnosis is.”

The friends created a GoFundMe page hoping to raise enough to cover all or some of the cost of a trip to Disney World in Florida.

“Any other money left will be given to the family for medical expenses Amanda will incur throughout this year,” said Brushett.

Sheppard’s friends have been blown away by the support they are receiving for the family.

“To see the GoFundMe page go from zero to $20,000 in less than a week, and now another $5,000 in less than two weeks is overwhelming,” said Brushett.

She said Sheppard has always been surrounded by an amazing group of friends and family, “but could (we could) never foresee this amount of generosity.”

Brushett added that friends have also planned other fundraisers including an online auction and a benefit concert to help cover any additional costs the family might incur during her treatment.

“I know Amanda and her family are more than thankful and could never imagine this much support either,” said Brushett.

“I'd like to personally thank everyone on behalf of Amanda, her family and all her friends. She's so deserving of it and we're all very excited to see Amanda, her boys and parents go on this well-deserved trip.”
