Winds gusting in excess of 130 km/h managed to flip a commercial trailer, rip siding and decks off homes and tore a roof off a store last night. A blizzard and wind warning remain in effect for today, tonight and tomorrow. Gusts will continue to exceed 100 km/h until Wednesday evening, with sustained winds over 70 km/h. Marine Atlantic ferries will remain tied up at dockside until Thursday, Dec 28.

Christmas storm causes damage in Port aux Basques

Winds that exceeded 130 km/h ripped the roof off of the Home Hardware building in Port aux Basques on Christmas night.

Much of Home Hardware’s damaged roof came to rest on top of a car parked near the building.

Some of the roof also landed in the store’s parking lot.

Debris from the Home Hardware roof litters some of the street and sidewalk.

Several homes in the Channel area suffered torn siding.

Another building on Main Street sustained damage due to the high winds.

With winds continuing through to Wednesday evening, damaged homes will have to wait before repairs can be made.
