Some 4R harvesters say recent shrimp catches are strongest they've ever seen

Roland Genge & his son Travis Genge (pictured) are experiencing some of the best catch rates for shrimp the harvesters have ever seen. Roland credits this catch rate to a moratorium on April harvesting established by harvesters in that area.

Strongest catch of their lives

ANCHOR POINT AND PORT AU CHOIX, NL – Anchor Point shrimp fisherman Roland Genge says the catch rates in area 5-12 of the 4R zone are the best he’s ever seen.

Dean Offrey in Port au Choix says these high catch rates are being noted from Port au Choix harvesters as well.

Genge credits the high catch rates to a policy established by fellow harvesters to not catch shrimp during April. Genge says this policy was put in place by the fishermen as April is the prime month to let shrimp spawn.

Now that they are getting these successful catch rates, he says their policy has been vindicated. With the declines in stock noted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Genge says this is a clear sign the insights and expertise of fishermen who have spent their lives on the water should be noted more in future DFO studies.
