The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District named Tony Stack the interim director of education and chief executive officer today (Wednesday).

He replaces Darrin Pike, who left the position earlier this month to take on a role with the Newfoundland and Labrador Teacher’s Association.

Stack, who is the NLESD’s assistant director of education responsible for programs and operations, is a former member of the Canadian Forces who did a six-and-a-half month tour in Afghanistan in 2004.

After returning from overseas, the St. John’s native was promoted to lieutenant colonel and assumed command of the 37 Canadian Brigade Group, followed by a promotion to the rank of colonel in 2006. In December 2009, Stack became deputy commander of the Land Force Atlantic Area under the rank of brigadier general.

In the fall of 2010, Stack was the overall commander of the military response to Hurricane Igor in this province.

His military service ended in 2016.

As an educator, Stack served vice-principal of Roncalli high school in Avondale and principal at St. Peter's Junior High in Mount Pearl.
