Wednesday, staff was disappointed to report one of the town’s new chairs missing. It was subsequently found, rendered unusable and completely destroyed, likely with an axe.
Council had received a grant from the provincial government to purchase the chairs, along with benches and picnic tables, to put around town for locals and tourists to rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery in the Port au Choix area.
Four of the chairs, three doubles and one single, were put out on Tuesday afternoon. When staff returned to work the following morning, the single, which was placed across the road from Monty’s Place on the Main Road, was nowhere to be found.
They looked all around town, but their search turned up empty.
The town took to Facebook to express its disappointment and to look for help finding the chair. In the comments, a number of people expressed frustration, calling the apparent theft of the chair “shameful” and “disgusting.”
Unfortunately for the town, during lunchtime, the chair was returned, completely battered and destroyed.
Those who found it said it was in the trailer court area of town when they picked it up.
The town had also put out two picnic tables the previous week. They haven’t incurred any damage nor have the other three chairs. The perpetrator and their motive are unknown.
The incident has been reported to the RCMP with the hope they’ll keep an eye out on the town’s public property to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.
