Newly elected St. Anthony mayor Desmond McDonald, right, shakes hands with outgoing mayor Ernest Simms after his victory Wednesday night.

ST. ANTHONY, NL – The votes are all tallied and Desmond McDonald will be the new mayor of St. Anthony.

McDonald, who has served on the Town of St. Anthony’s council since February 2016, defeated Boyd Noel in the St. Anthony mayoral race.
He received 620 votes to Noel’s 288.
“I’m a little overwhelmed with all the support,” McDonald told the Northern Pen. “I’m very appreciative of it. I’m happy the people have put their faith in me.”
He was looking forward to celebrating with friends and family at a friend’s home.
McDonald wished to thank everyone who supported him, including his wife, parents and family.
“This stuff doesn’t come by easy and everyone helps contribute to it,” he said. “When you run for politics, you’re not only opening the door to yourself, you open the door to your whole family. So, they have to be supportive and I’m appreciative of that.”
McDonald also wished to thank his opponent, Boyd Noel, for the race.
“It’s very brave to put your name forward,” he said. “He’s served this town very well in the past and I want to congratulate him on that. He’s always been very cordial to me, we’ve always had a good relationship and I look forward to working with him in his other capacity as chair of the Labrador-Grenfell Health.”
Noel, who has previously served as mayor of the town, echoed similar sentiments.
He said he congratulated his opponent wholeheartedly.
“I think we had a great campaign, nobody got dirty with it and everything went quite well,” he said. “I have nothing but the utmost respect for the individual.”
Despite the defeat, Noel felt satisfied with his showing.
“I gave it a run, I tried and I still got lots to do,” he said, referring to his other positions.
He wished to thank his supporters.
Both mayoral candidates also congratulated everyone who put their name forward and was elected to council as well.
Both men agreed it’s a challenge to put your name forward.
“Now it’s a challenge for them over the next four years,” said Noel.
Incumbents Krista Lynn Howell, Eric Boyd, Bruce Payne, and Darl Scott were re-elected to council. Brad Johannessen and Mark Pilgrim were elected to council and will each serve their first terms.
