Meeting held on new landfill site in Labrador Straits

The Waste Disposal committee for Pinware-L’Anse-au-Clair will be putting forth a proposal to the Department of Municipal Affairs for a new waste disposal facility outside of L’Anse-au-Loup.

A fire started at the Crow Head landfill site in 2015. The Waste Disposal Committee wants a new location.

On Feb. 9 the committee met with Municipal Affairs Minister Eddie Joyce, Environment and Climate Change Minister Perry Trimper, Labrador West MHA Graham Letto and Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair MHA Lisa Dempster to discuss potential alternatives to the landfill site in Crow Head outside of Forteau.

This location has been overcapacity for several years and a new facility is required.

The Provincial Government representatives proposed a single site at St. Lewis River for Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair. However, the Waste Disposal committee did not support this proposal.

According to committee chair Shane Dumaresque, they unanimously voted against it.

Instead, they support a single site for a smaller geographical area from Red Bay to L’Anse-au-Clair. This would be located on a hill known as The Battery, just outside of L’Anse-au-Loup.

All representatives for the communities in attendance, except for L’Anse-au-Clair, were in favour of this new location. Red Bay, which currently has its own landfill, also supports joining and using this new site.

Dumaresque says he was surprised that not everyone was on board with the proposed location. Nonetheless, he felt very positive about the meeting.

He has told Joyce that he will be submitting a proposal to the department by March 15.
