LEWISPORTE, NL – Volunteers with Lewisporte Fire Rescue had to fight high winds that fueled a residential blaze on Harbourview Terrace Friday morning.

The department received the call for assistance at 9:38 a.m. Despite a rapid response time, Chief Rob Fudge said the home was already fully engulfed when fire fighters arrived on scene.

“Once the first crew got here there was fire rolling out through windows,” Fudge told the Pilot. “With the wind conditions today and all the windows open she went through, but it was a good, fast knock down.”

The lone occupant of the home was inside when the fire started, but Fudge says the resident and their pet both escaped the house unscathed. Fudge says the fire spread rapidly and aggressively due to high winds. Smoke from the fire could be seen throughout town.

“As soon as the pager went off you could look down through town and the smoke was towering then,” said Fudge. “The wind is strong so it didn’t take long to go through.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The Pilot will provide updates as more information becomes available.
