Says conversations between MHA and locals favourable
Ben Ploughman of Port au Choix is undergoing a hunger strike in protest of fishery issues and road conditions.
PORT AU CHOIX, NL — Ben Ploughman has ended his hunger strike at four days, saying discussions between the local MHA and town representatives have been favourable.
The Port au Choix man entered the hunger strike, participating in the town’s demonstration outside Department of Fisheries and Oceans offices Tuesday, over poor condition of roads in the town and issues with the fishery.
He said discussions between Christopher Mitchelmore, Liberal member for St. Barbe-L’Anse aux Meadows, and Jeannie Billard, the Port au Choix Hospitality Committee chair on behalf of the town, to resolve the road dilemma facing the town “has given us hope for our beautiful little town.”
He had invited Premier Dwight Ball to town to “share with you a slice of my frozen pizza that I have waiting in the fridge,” but the meeting did not happen.
“I cooked and ate my pizza all alone,” Ploughman stated in an email. “Now Gone Fishing.”
Ploughman doesn’t plan to remain quiet on the issues facing the town, pledging he will “explain the difference between a fresh seal carcass in pothole and a dead seal thrown into the streets of my hometown” — referencing the demonstration of a seal carcass placed in a pothole in the town last week.
