Infrastructure funding announced for Labrador Straits

Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is investing in infrastructure in rural Labrador Straits for Canada 150.

Through its Innovative Communities Fund and their Canada 150 Infrastructure Program, ACOA will provide nearly $306,000 to fund projects under Canada 150 in Red Bay, L’Anse-au-Clair, L’Anse-au-Loup, Forteau, and Cartwright.

The Department of Business, Tourism, Culture, and Rural Development for Newfoundland and Labrador also announced provincial funding of $89,320 for Red Bay.

These investments are intended to enhance community and tourism infrastructure.

Labrador MP Yvonne Jones and Cartwright-L’Anse-au-Clair MHA Lisa Dempster were on hand to make the announcement at the Red Bay Community Centre on Jan. 14.

In a statement released by ACOA, Jones said, “These investments in Labrador Straits improve on our community and recreational infrastructure and also support the long-term development and marketing of one of our country’s signature tourism offerings, the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station UNESCO World Heritage Site.”

Other funding

The Town of Red Bay is receiving over $89,000 in provincial funding and over $170,000 from ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund to go towards implementing Phase II of its brand identity and signage plan for the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Town of L’Anse-au-Clair is receiving over $56,000 from ACOA’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) to enhance a trail in the community, upgrade its playground, and acquire equipment for a community centre.
The Town of Forteau is receiving over $18,000 from ACOA’s CIP 150 to improve its playground through the acquisition and installation of playground equipment.
The Town of L’Anse-au-Loup is receiving over $36,000 from ACOA’s CIP 150 to renovate the community pool and improve the existing ski trail.
The Town of Cartwright is receiving nearly $24,000 from ACOA’s CIP 150 to enhance an existing gymnasium and playground.
