The St Anthony SABRI Northern Prawns girls’ broomball team is headed to the national championships in Manitoba, if they can raise an estimated $40,000.
Having claimed the provincial champions title seven out of the past eight years - they were beaten by Roddickton in 2006 - the reigning Newfoundland titleholders need to raise the money fast, with the nationals in Winnipeg on March 29.
The Prawns beat Goose Bay 3-2 February last year to claim the title.
“I’ve been twice as a player and once as a coach and I can tell you that the experience of being there was amazing,” head coach Monica Sinyard told the Pen.
“It really is something that these girls will never forget.”
A team of 20 players will be joined on tour by senior officials Sandra Sinyard, Cara Hancock, Keitha Carroll, manager Rhonda Patey and Ms Sinyard.
“We have already started training, we are running twice a week as a team and we will start swimming soon,” Ms Sinyard said.
“It is going to be tough going though. There are 12 teams and a lot of them play broomball for most of the year. It is a college sport in places like Quebec and Saskatchewan.”
Ms Sinyard said it was hard to pinpoint exactly why the team had been successful over the past eight years but said there was a strong tradition of broomball in St Anthony.
The next provincial championships will again be held at St Anthony in February 2011.
