Darron Letemplier and Camille Lavallee, black belts in the art of Chinese kenpo karate, have been chosen to represent Team Canada at the World Karate Championships in Dublin, Ireland this November.
They travelled to Quebec City on March 7 and qualified at the WKC Provincials Tryouts held by Master Sensei Clermont Poulin. From there the top eight competitors from each province in Canada advanced to the Canadian Karate Championships, which were held in Ottawa last month and hosted by president John Douvers and Sensei Michel Bernardo.
The tournament determined three top black belt competitors in the respective divisions who would be members of Team Canada and represent the country at the world tournament. Letemplier and Lavallee both earned silver medals at the Canadian championships.
Letemplier is a resident of Blanc Sablon, Quebec, and is the Sensei of his own karate school. He placed second in Canada for traditional kata and fifth for point fighting. He is listed as an alternative in point fighting.
Lavallee, a native of Middle Bay who has lived in St. Barbe for the past 30 years, has been training out of the Kenpo Karate School with Sensei Letemplier. He placed second in Canada in the 85-middle weight division in point fighting.
Letemplier and Lavallee say they're anxious and excited about the opportunity to represent their country at a world competition. They have five months to prepare for the tournament and a shot at a podium finish.
