Letter to the Editor -
Dear Editor,
There is growing sentiment by some on the Northern Peninsula that Marshall Dean should step down and trigger a by-election in the district.
The fact is the government has made the decision to remove services from St. Anthony and many believe it is politically motivated. The recent ejection from the house of Marshall Dean has caused many to think it might be nice to have him removed permanently.
Of course Mr. Dean would have to believe there was some benefit for the riding he represents to have another by-election. At the very least the decision by Dean to resign would cause some negative fallout for the government who would have to call a by-election to elect a new MHA for the district. This campaign would give the government an opportunity as well to measure the response to its latest move.
If the election should come about would the government announce that the air ambulance was going to be spared the move for the time being in an attempt to sway the electorate to vote for the governing party? If so would people be even more convinced that the decision to move it was political payback for loosing the seat to the Liberals? Would the voters return the seat to the Liberal who made the sacrifice of his seat for the best of the district? Whatever happened it would be a very interesting time on the Northern Peninsula. The chances of that happening though would be about the same as having a great year in the crab and shrimp season on the Northern Peninsula.
It is however certain that the removal of the air ambulance would have a very negative and wide spread effect on the town it now calls home. The removal of good paying jobs from the economy and the spin off loss in the future could be devastating. The government should re-consider the decision after having time to look at the other negative impacts outside of the number of flights and where they originate and end.
Sincerely,
Tim Clark
St. Anthony
