Dear Editor, I want to pass on a story of kindness that one can only find in Newfoundland and Labrador.
My brother and I had to travel back home to L'Anse au Clair to be with our mother who was battling cancer. I was travelling from Arizona, spending Christmas with my wife's family. My brother was travelling from Jerusalem, a Canadian Forces soldier on a one-year deployment. We both met up in St John's, ready to take our flight to St Anthony the next day (our original plan was to fly to Blanc Sablon because our Mom was supposed to travel back to Forteau for palliative care but the decision was made to keep her in St Anthony because of the medical care she needed). So we boarded Provincial Airlines for St Anthony but luck was not completely with us this day as is the case when travelling around Newfoundland and Labrador in the winter. The weather in St. Anthony did not allow us to land, despite the pilot's attempt, so it was off to Blanc Sablon and this was when the first act of kindness happened. If we were able to land we could take the St Barbe ferry from Blanc Sablon but it would be tight, if not for the kindness of Labrador Marine. Once they were notified of our circumstances they made the decision to delay the scheduled departure by one hour in order that we would make the crossing. Unfortunately, after two unsuccessful landing attempts in Blanc Sablon, we had to continue to Goose Bay because of inclement weather at the Blanc Sablon airport. So we left Goose Bay for the return trek to St John's with planned stops in reverse order. Luck was with us this time and we were able to land in Blanc Sablon. We did not make the ferry this day and crossed the next day to be with our Mom in St Anthony. We spent three wonderful days with our Mom before she passed away on January 1, 2010. Our Mom was in the hospital for three weeks and the kindness, generosity, professionalism and sympathy of the hospital staff is more than I can put in this letter. All I and my family can say is thank you for everything you did for us. The special people of the OBS department in the hospital have left us with a lifetime of memories.
To our family and the friends in and around L'Anse au Clair, your support cannot be expressed in words. To have to go through a family death is inexplicable but to have that many family and friends around does make a difference and for that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Mom never wanted anything for herself but was only concerned for others but this time you were there for us and therefore her.
Sincerely
Lyndon, Lloyd, Kim, Sandra
