Letter to the Editor -
Dear Editor:
Last spring the Youth Centre in Plum Point received some very exciting news.
They had been awarded the honour of carrying the Olympic torch for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Seventeen youth, along with three leaders, traveled to St. Anthony on Nov. 12 to become part of the Olympic dream.
It was rewarding to see them dressed in their Olympic attire and they represented the CYN in Plum Point very well. The youth group from Plum Point were the first to light the Olympic torch for the first leg of its journey to Grenfell Memorial Park in St. Anthony. They then proceeded through the street in St. Anthony until all 20 of the group had carried the torch and felt its significance.
To the parents and other supporters of the group this team held a strong presence; however, to the media they must have been invisible. To our disappointment, both CBC and NTV provided very little coverage of the celebration in St. Anthony. To add fuel to the fire, our very own newspaper, The Northern Pen, failed to even mention our involvement in such an important event. How is it possible to overlook a group of 20 people when there are only 24 involved? There wasn't one word or photo to acknowledge that the youth from Plum Point were ever there. This is unbelievable and, furthermore, it is unacceptable. Some of the youth that you failed to recognize deliver your paper every week. People purchase the Northern Pen to see fair representation of happenings in and around their communities. Such was not the case in last week's paper.
Providing equal and fair representation, we realize, is no easy task; however, you must be cognizant of this fact. It appears that very little thought and effort was put into capturing the Olympic experience of participants other than a very select few.
You, The Northern Pen, boast "Serving the Great Northern Peninsula and Southern Labrador" underneath your title each week. Well, practice what you preach! Remember that you serve this whole area and your paper should reflect just that. Since such was not the case last week, we will contribute our own photo to let the people know that we were there and in fine fashion.
In the province we often feel as the forgotten peninsula; however, we do not expect to be forgotten by our own.
Most disappointed,
Parents of the
Community Youth Network,
Plum Point
