Letter to the Editor -
Dear Editor:
With a provincial byelection on Oct. 27, the people of The Straits and White Bay North have an opportunity to have some degree of control over their region and their future.
They have also been empowered to be the voice for the rest of rural Newfoundland and Labrador when they choose their next House of Assembly representative.
Rural Newfoundland and Labrador can only strengthen when we all act together.
Now is the time to let government decision-makers know that there can be no compromise when it comes to the delivery and quality of health care services.
Even if this government comes out to announce a reversal of decision on Flowers Cove or Lewisporte - which is very likely as a strategy to win votes - be mindful not to be duped into short-term appeasement.
A government that is hell-bent on health care or other cuts in rural Newfoundland and Labrador to save money will eventually find other ways to achieve its goal whether in your community or hundreds others across the province.
A government that failed to apply its own 'rural lens' standards to decision-making will do it again.
The message to this or any government?
Rural reinforcement - not rural rot.
Remember, as rural citizens, we are all in this together.
Otherwise, we're all outta here...
