A Hawke's Bay man is facing a raft charges after a hit-and-run incident in the early hours of Sunday, June 27.

RCMP Northern Peninsula NCO Sergeant Randy Freeborn said it appeared the 46-year-old hit four people before running his truck off the road into a bog.

The incident took place on a cabin road about 7km from the Torrent River interpretive centre.

"It seems that four people were walking down the road there and the vehicle was behind them," he told the Pen. "It seems as though there was a discussion of some kind and the driver appears to have struck them down, then his vehicle ended up in the bog and he got out and went elsewhere."

Sgt. Freeborn said the four pedestrians went to Port Saunders hospital where they were treated for minor injuries, and about 12 hours later the driver phoned police and informed them of his whereabouts.

He is now facing four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and failing to stop or remain with injured persons.

The man is scheduled to appear before the provincial court in Port au Choix on August 31.

On the same weekend, a 42-year-old Winter House Brook man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on route 431 in Lomond River.

Sergeant Freeborn said another driver found the accident and alerted police. The man was declared deceased at the scene.

Collision analysts are investigating the cause of the accident.
