Committee is hosting a fishing derby at Coles Pond on Saturday, March 28.

The partnership of the two groups allows two committees to raise funds for their individual causes while working together for the betterment of the region.

The arena, located in Roddickton, was idle during the 2007-08 season. However, due to the work of volunteers and support from the surrounding communities, the towns were able to open the doors to the facility this winter.

The Come Home Year Committee will be hosting celebrations this August. The funds raised will allow those activities to occur and facilities to keep operating while creating community spirit and fun for everyone.

"It is important for the community to come out and support these events whether it is through making donations or volunteering their time," said Todd May, co-chair of the Roddickton-Bide Arm Recreation Committee. "It ensures that all people from the community and the region have access to these recreational facilities.

"Without the volunteers putting in their time and effort, such events as the upcoming fishing derby would not be possible," he added.

The derby will commence with registration at 9 a.m. and hooks will be dropped at 10 a.m. to try and catch that big one. Throughout the day different activities will be taking place for the whole family to enjoy, such as a snowshoe race and obstacle course, blob, fishtail, snowball pitching and hats off.

Organizers say that if people aren't familiar with some of the activities, they've got to come out and learn first-hand. After a day of fishing and playing games, participants can enjoy food and refreshments such as mooseburgers, hot dogs, soup, chili, pop and hot chocolate.

"I encourage everyone to come out and give your support to ensure that this event will be

successful," said Renee Humby, chair of the Bide Arm Come Home Year Committee. "Events such as this enhances our community spirit and pride."

If the derby has to be postponed due to weather, it will be scheduled to go ahead the following Saturday on April 4.

More information is available by contacting Renee Humby at 457-2611 or Tony Randell at 457-7721.
