The province is spending $500,000 to look at alternate energy sources other than diesel generation for coastal Labrador.
The study will be conducted in seven communities and look at sources such as solar, wind and mini-hydroelectric facilities.
"These energy efficiency initiatives will identify technically sound alternative energy options and useful ways to conserve energy in the communities where these initiatives are taking place," said Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale. "These investments are focused on maximizing our energy resource potential in these communities and assisting property owners to lower their energy costs through reduced consumptions."
The communities selected for the study are Cartwright, Charlottetown, Hopedale, Makkovik, Mary's Harbour, Nain and Port Hope Simpson.
Liberal Opposition leader Yvonne Jones says it's not enough.
"Instead of conducting a study to evaluate the viability of complementing diesel power, I would encourage Ms. Dunderdale to look at replacing the environmentally damaging diesel system in our communities," said Ms. Jones. "Hydro power is a clean source of energy that could be beneficial to government, our environment and the people living on the coast of Labrador for years into the future."
